ON THE OTHER HAND
A Novella

By Janine Desvaux

On the Other Hand begins when Catherine Cater, a wholesome, strong-willed ninth grader is ruthlessly attacked following an incident in her physical education class. Upon discovering that her tormentor and the man who murdered her father share a similar cultural background, she embarks on a mission. But as she uncovers long held secrets, she stumbles upon an explosive situation. That is when intrigue, trickery and revenge bubble to the surface to upend Catherine’s single parent home life. The story is set in the fictitious town of Burgesville Virginia, in suburban Washington D.C.

An uprooted islander from Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, and a former High School Language Teacher, Janine MJ Desvaux devotes her time to tutoring students in need of academic support, and pursuing her own writing goals. Alongside her career as an educator, her passion for visual art blossomed. Her watercolors having won recognition in competitions in the United States and abroad.

A few years ago, she set aside her paints and brushes and transitioned to her keyboard and screen. At the onset, she sought help from The Institute of Children’s Literature in Connecticut, where she was awarded two Diplomas. She’s currently a member of the international online critique group, Critique Circle. Her creative fiction piece entitled The Making of Sugar: A Memory placed First in the 2014 Writers-Editors Network International Writing Competition. Her debut Young Adult short story, A World Apart: a story of innocent love was published in 2011.

Moving forward, Janine continues her work with students while improving her writing skills. In the same way her island flora fed her imagination as a watercolorist, her multicultural, multilingual and multiethnic culture fuels her imagination as a writer.
A native French speaker, Janine has lived in and traveled to several countries around the world. She has two daughters, three grandsons and one granddaughter. She resides with her companion in Virginia.
